Around Crofton
By PAULA POPP, For the Capital
Emily Sopha, of Crofton, will display her photographs of local scenery, fruits and vegetables during the month of May at the Crofton Library, 1681 Riedel Rd.
Mrs. Sopha is a native of Ohio who graduated from Miami University in Oxford with a degree in public relations and marketing. She worked at U.S. News & World Report in NYC as a marketing manager before transferring to the D.C. office five years ago. After her son was born three years ago, she began to question the effects of a demanding job and long commute.
"After the birth of my son, I wanted to focus on him and home," said Mrs. Sopha as we sat in her kitchen listening to her husband and son during the bath time ritual that was taking place upstairs.
Mrs. Sopha always loved taking pictures as a kid, but it became a serious hobby during her college years and has turned into a real passion at this stage of her life. It only seemed fitting that with her
Web design and marketing skills; she should start a home based photography business.
The name, Sophatography, was part marketing creativity and necessity as Mrs. Sopha realized how difficult is was to say Emily Sopha Photography without stumbling over the double "ph" sound - you try saying it five times fast.
"I love capturing images which evoke real emotions and memories and strive to make these types of images accessible to everyone," said Mrs. Sopha whose favorite subjects are people, especially children and families.
Many of her clients request family portraits that are then turned into holiday cards or birth announcements. Mrs. Sopha offers in-home visits, especially for newborns, and will photograph small weddings, birthday parties, anniversary parties or cultural events such as the Korean Tol, a celebration of a Korean child's first birthday which is considered to be especially important due to the high infant mortality rates from the past.
When you're out and about next month, stop by the library and enjoy pictures of the cherry blossoms, blue angels and local historic sites.
